Operation Countryman was a regionwide investigation into corruption in the Metropolitan Police Service and the City of London Police from 1978 to 1984, after numerous reports of alleged misconduct.

After DCI Gene Hunt accidentally shot DI Alex Drake following the King Douglas Robbery of November 1982, Chief Superintendent Nicholas Callahan of the Discipline and Complaints Department of Scotland Yard apparently sent DCI Jim Keats to Fenchurch East police station. Keats was to assess the CID as part of wide-ranging Operation Countryman; however, he was actually the Devil, at least in the context of Gene Hunt's World.
