Hyde, Greater Manchester is where the residents of Gene Hunt's World believe Sam Tyler transferred from, thus "Hyde" can be considered an analogy for 2006, Sam's original time period, as shown when Sam receives a call from "Hyde 2612" and is connected to the outside world.

In the last episode, when Sam wakes up from his coma in 2006, the audience discovers that in hospital he was in the "Hyde" ward, in room 2612.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Presumably the 'hidden' and 'Jekyll and Hyde' associations of the name are a boon to the writers.
  • David Bowie, who wrote 'Life on Mars' (the song) was born in Brixton in London.
  • Hyde is 8 miles from Manchester.
  • Hyde became part of Greater Manchester in 1974 when Tameside was created. It was formerly in Cheshire. This would tie in with the date that Sam "went back" to the present day.
