Hit and Run is the (unaired) pilot episode of the US science fiction crime drama Life on Mars produced by 20th Century Fox Television and ABC Studios. The episode was leaked onto the internet in June 2008.
Synopsis[]
After an accident, detective Sam Tyler inexplicably finds himself back in 1972, where he must help solve a murder that is eerily similar to a case he was investigating in 2007.

Differences to the actual series[]
- In the pilot episode, Det. Sam Tyler is hit by a car in 2007 and awakens in 1972. In the series, he is hit by a car in 2008 and awakens in 1973.
- The location was originally Los Angeles, California before becoming New York City.
- Many primary actors were recast for the new series:
- Colm Meaney was replaced by Harvey Keitel as Lt. Gene Hunt.
- Rachelle LeFevre was replaced by Gretchen Mol as Annie Norris.
- Lenny Clarke was replaced by Michael Imperioli as Det. Ray Carling - a similar character.
- Stephanie Jacobsen was replaced by Lisa Bonet as Maya Daniels.
- In the pilot episode, Tyler wears an amber-coloured jacket which was replaced by a black jacket similar to the original British character.
- Gene Hunt was originally a Police Captain before becoming a Lieutenant.
