Captain Gene Hunt was the leader of the homocide division of a police precinct in 1970s Los Angeles who believed in violence over negotiation. In 1972, he was joined by Det. Sam Tyler, who awoke after being hit by a car in 2007. Together they investigated the disappearance of two women and the murders of Edward Kenmore.

This rendition of Gene Hunt is played by Irish actor Colm Meaney, who is most recognised for his role as Miles O'Brien in the science fiction television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He has more recently been one of the stars of Hell on Wheels as "Doc" Durant.
