Gene Hunt, for the majority of his time during Life on Mars, wore a then-fashionable long, single-breasted camel-hair coat. In Ashes to Ashes, he sports a more up-to-date coat. The fate of the old one remains unexplained until Jackie Queen (a journalist last seen in the events of Series 1: Episode 6 (Life on Mars) arrives pregnant in Fenchurch in 1982 (Series 2: Episode 4 (Ashes to Ashes)), searching for her niece, and wearing the original coat. She explains that Gene left it at her flat. She offers it back to him, but Hunt brusquely tells her to hold on to it, as she'll need something to keep her baby warm.
